Course overview

The course is intended for those who are preparing to progress to working with children or working towards a career in child development. The course is also valuable in helping parents support their own children to learn.

It is recommended that learners have completed one of LearnTelford’s short unaccredited Child Psychology courses in preparation for the Level 1 but this is not mandatory.

By the end of the course, learners should:
- Know more about children’s social and emotional needs and how they can be met
- Understand key aspects of child development
- Understand how to encourage children to feel positive about themselves
- Understand the role and purpose of play in child development

 

Learners will study:

Understanding Children’s Social and Emotional Development Level 1

Understanding Play Level 1

By successfully completing this course you will achieve an Level 1 Award in Child Development (OCNWM)

 

Session details

You must attend the first session where you will be able to find out more detail about the course before you enrol.

Assessment is completed via portfolio work.
Learners will need to be able to attend at least 80% of the sessions to complete the portfolio and individual tutorials will be offered during the course.

Eligibility criteria

Eligibility
Learners must be aged 19 or over to be eligible for this course.
For the 2018/19 academic year, learners who have completed the Level 1 Understanding Children’s Social and Emotional Development Unit will be able to enrol on the course to complete Understanding Play and gain the Level 1 Award in Child Development.

 

Course Fee
The course is free if learners are:
- Unemployed
- or employed and earn less than £15,736.50 annual gross salary
Learners will need to provide evidence of their income if they are employed and believe they are entitled to a free course. This could be a pay slip or contract of employment.
For other eligible learners, the course fee is likely to be £150. This will be confirmed at the information session.

Venue and accessibility

Oakengates Town Council’s new community venue is called The Wakes.

The Wakes has an IT room with 10 networked computers. A formal meeting room for 20 people. Also a bigger room holding up to 120 people, although this can be made smaller. There is a café in the building and we have a lift and disabled toilets.

Oakengates high street is close by with various shops and cafes. Free parking is available outside.

After the course

Learners who want to progress to work in a school will need to gain a Level 2 qualification in English and Maths. We offer a range of courses to gain these qualifications – so please search the website for more details.
