Course overview

This accredited online course is intended as a first step for people who want to volunteer or work as a Mentor.

During the course, you will understand about:

  • the role of the mentor
  • the importance of confidentiality in a mentor/mentee relationship
  • to recognise and employ relevant skills and qualities to fulfil a mentor role

Learners will have an opportunity to gain an Level 1 Award in Mentoring Skills for Working with Young People (Open College Network West Midlands) and then continue their learning to progress onto the Level 2 Award in Mentoring course.

Assessment is completed via portfolio work.
Learners will need to be able to attend at least 80% of the sessions to complete the portfolio and individual tutorials will be offered during the course.

The course is taught in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere with an experienced tutor and there is opportunity to meet and socialise with others in the group in a friendly, relaxed environment.

Learners with any special needs can discuss these with the tutor at enrolment to ensure that the course is suitable or can be adapted for their needs.

Session details

An experienced tutor will host the session via Microsoft Teams.

When registering interest, please ensure that you use a valid email address as this is where the invite to join the online session will be sent.

Closer to the date for the start of the session, check your emails for a link to "Join Microsoft Team Meeting" and click this join a few minutes before the start time.

Places are limited and registering your interest and attending the information session does not guarantee a place on the course.

Eligibility criteria

The course is free if you are:

  • a parent or carer with a child at a school in Telford which offers our Family Learning courses
  • Unemployed
  • or you are employed and earn less than £17,004 annual gross salary

You will need to provide evidence of your income if you are employed and believe you are entitled to a free course. This could be a pay slip or contract of employment.
If you are employed, the course is part funded by the government but you will be required to make a contribution of £28.

We also operate a fee remission policy, so if you earn more than £17,004 per year but still cannot afford to pay for course you can apply for support. This may mean you get the course for free.

This course is offered as an online session.

You will need a laptop, smartphone or tablet and the Microsoft Teams app to join the session.
