Course overview

This accredited course is intended for people living in the UK who do not have English as a first language. The course is suitable for people who want to work towards qualification in English reading, writing and speaking and listening at entry level. Aimed at people who have some very basic skills already and want to gain qualifications at Entry 1 and Entry 2 .

There will be an opportunity to work towards qualifications in Speaking and Listening, Reading and Writing.  Qualifications are offered between entry level and advanced levels up to level 2.

Study will be active and relevant to life and work in the UK.

Session details

Please attend the information session to enrol on this course.

At the information session, you complete a short skills assessment. This will allow the tutor to see which course is most suitable for your level. You may be offered a course on a different day or at a different level.

Please bring any English certificates you have to the first session.

 

 

Eligibility criteria

Learners must be aged 19 or over from 1st August 2022.

Unfortunately you will not be eligible to enrol on this course if you live in Wolverhampton, Walsall, Sandwell, Dudley, Solihull or Birmingham.

The tutor will provide more information on eligibility to enrol on the course at the Information Session. 

The course is free if you are:

  • Unemployed
  • or you are employed and earn less than £18,525 annual gross salary

You will need to provide evidence of your income if you are employed and believe you are entitled to a free course. This could be a pay slip or contract of employment.

If you are employed, and earn more than £18,525 the course is part funded by the government and you will be required to make a contribution of £40.  We also operate a fee remission policy, so if you earn more than £18,525 per year but still cannot afford to pay for course you can apply for support. This may mean you get the course for free. Please contact us if you would like to make an application.

What to Do Next

Learners who want to progress in their ESOL studies, can work through the qualification levels up to ESOL Level 2.

Once they have achieved ESOL Level 2, learners will have the opportunity to continue their learning in Functional Skills English and Maths from Entry Level 2, Entry Level 3, Level 1 and Level 2.

There is also an opportunity to practice your communication skills at the English Café at the University Centre Telford and to progress onto an IELTS preparation course which the University offer during the year.  Please contact the University Centre Telford for further information.
