Course overview

This course is for parents, carers with a child who attends St Peters Primary School.

This accredited course is intended as a stepping stone for people who want to work with children. By successfully completing this course you will achieve an Level 2 Award in Child Development (AIM Qualification)

Learners will need to have completed the Level 1 Award in Child Development or have previous relevant experience working with children to be eligible to enrol on this course.

By the end of the course, learners should:

  • Understand how social and emotional needs contribute to child development
  • Understand factors that impact on social and emotional development
  • Understand how to support social and emotional development
  • Know about the importance of play for children in their development
  • Understand the purpose of play
  • Know the importance of a curriculum plan in planning play

By successfully completing this course you will achieve an Level 2 Award in Child Development (AIM Qualification)

Assessment is completed via portfolio of written course work.
Learners will need to be able to attend at least 80% of the sessions to complete the portfolio and individual tutorials will be offered during the course.

The course is taught in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere with an experienced tutor, and there is opportunity to meet and socialise with other in the group in a friendly, relaxed environment.

Learners with any special needs can discuss these with the tutor at the information session to ensure that the course is suitable or can be adapted for their needs.

Session details

You must attend all sessions to achieve the full award.

You will produce and submit a completed portfolio of your work and continually assessed throughout the 12 weeks. There is no final exam.

Eligibility criteria

This course is for parents, carers with a child who attends St Peters Primary School.

Parents do not need any previous experience. Any parents with any special needs can discuss these with the tutor at enrolment to ensure that the course is suitable or can be adapted for their needs. The course is available to all adults who have children in the school. If numbers applying for the course are high preference will be given to parents who: • Do not hold a full-level 2 qualification including English or maths. • Do not hold a level 2 Maths qualification • Do not hold a level 2 English qualification • Are unemployed or retired. • Are claiming JSA • Employed and looking to progress onto further Family Learning courses • Are parents/carers of children/young people who are entitled to free school meals. Parents who have been referred to the course for the purposes of improving their mental health and wellbeing

What to Do Next

Parents who want to progress to work in a school will need to gain a Level 2 qualification in English and maths. We offer a range of courses to gain these qualifications so please search the website for more details. An National Careers Service officer will visit the venue to advise on progression and employment.
