Course overview
This is an accredited new course to discover and explore the Art of Sashiko - this is a traditional Japanese embroidery craft, originated from Japan 400 years ago, to strengthen and mend clothes. Nowadays, Sashiko embroidery can be seen to be practiced all around the world, and has become a very popular craft to support sustainability of fabrics.
Join this exciting new course and explore the different stitching patterns and styles used in traditional Sashiko, understand the origins and techniques to embellish and strengthen fabrics, and create beautifully decorated fabric craft items to give as gifts for special occasions or for your home. You will also learn some enterprise skills and contribute to a project to make and sell craft pieces.
Art can be very therapeutic and help you to spend some time away from the stresses of everyday life and enjoy some ‘me’ time.
During the course you will learn:
- what is traditional Sashiko as a craft
- how to use tools and equipment in Sashiko
- explore traditional Sashiko decorative stitches and techniques
- experiment with recycled materials and understand about sustainability with fabrics
- have an opportunity to take part in an enterprise project to understand how to sell your craft
On the course you will produce a portfolio of work towards the Level 1 Award in Skills for Living and Work - Craft Pathway (AIM Qualifications).
You will study units in:
- Creative Craft
- Enterprise in Craft
If you have already achieved the qualification from Open College Network West Midlands Level 1 Award in Craft Design or Craft and Enterprise you will not be eligible to join this course.
All materials will be provided on this course.
The course is taught in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere and no previous experience is needed. Learners with any special needs can discuss these with the tutor at enrolment to ensure that the course is suitable or can be adapted for their needs.
Session details
This course is for 12 weeks, please check you can attend every session for the whole course.

Once you've registered your interest, you will receive emails from us to keep you updated and to provide you with more information.
At the first session, your tutor will offer you details about the course, and a chance to ask any questions.
Eligibility criteria
The course is free if you are:
- Unemployed
- or you are employed and earn less than £25,750 annual gross salary
You will need to provide evidence of your income if you are employed and believe you are entitled to a free course. This could be a pay slip or contract of employment.
If you are employed, the course is part funded by the government but you will be required to make a contribution of £180.
We also operate a fee remission policy, so if you earn more than £25,750 per year but still cannot afford to pay for course you can apply for support. This may mean you get the course for free. Please contact us if you would like to make an application.
If you have already achieved the Open College Network West Midlands Level 1 Award in Craft Design or Craft and Enterprise you will not be eligible to join this course.
Learners must be aged 19 or over from 1st August 2025
Unfortunately you will not be eligible to enrol on this course if you live in Wolverhampton, Walsall, Sandwell, Dudley, Solihull or Birmingham.
Venue and accessibility
The Wakes
Oakengates Town Council’s community venue is called The Wakes. It is situated in Oakengates town centre in Market Square.
The Outpost Cafe is also situated in the building with a lift and disabled toilets. A variety of Oakengates’ local shops and cafés are nearby.
The building is wheel-chair accessible with a lift and steps available on entry to take visitors up to the café and training rooms.
Free parking is available nearby at Telford Theatre Car Park.
