The course is intended as a first step for people who are preparing to work with children, or towards a career in child development. The course is also valuable in helping parents support their own children to learn.

By the end of the course, learners should:

• Know more about children’s social and emotional needs and how they can be met
• Understand key aspects of child development
• Understand how to encourage children to feel positive about themselves
• Understand the role and purpose of play in child development

Learners will study units in:

• Understanding Children’s Social and Emotional Development Level 1
• Understanding Play Level 1

By successfully completing this course you will achieve a Level 1 Award in Child Development (AIM Qualification)

Assessment is completed via portfolio of written course work.
Learners will need to be able to attend at least 80% of the sessions to complete the portfolio and individual tutorials will be offered during the course.

The course is taught in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere with an experienced tutor, and there is opportunity to meet and socialise with others in the group in a friendly, relaxed environment.

Learners with any special needs can discuss these with the tutor at the information session to ensure that the course is suitable or can be adapted for their needs.

 

This course is for 12 weeks, please check you can attend every session for the whole course.

Once you've registered your interest, you will receive emails from us to keep you updated and to provide you with more information.

At the first session, your tutor will offer you details about the course, and a chance to ask any questions.

The course is free if you are:

• Unemployed
• or you are employed and earn less than £26,800 annual gross salary

You will need to provide evidence of your income if you are employed and believe you are entitled to a free course. This could be a pay slip or contract of employment.
If you are employed, the course is part funded by the government but you will be required to make a contribution of £168.

We also operate a fee remission policy, so if you earn more than £26,800 per year but still cannot afford to pay for the course you can apply for support. This may mean you get the course for free.

Learners must be aged 19 or over from 1st August 2026

Unfortunately you will not be eligible to enrol on this course if you live in Wolverhampton, Walsall, Sandwell, Dudley, Solihull or Birmingham.

Public transport

Bishton Court is only a short walk away from Telford bus station by walking through the shopping centre towards Aldi car park.  You then need to cross the road and walk through The Station Quarter and we are situated on the corner by The Quad building.  We are also only a short walk from Telford Train Station over the bridge. 

Free parking is available for the duration of your course at Southwater multi storey car park.  Ask your tutor for further information on the day. Use the postcode TF3 4BZ to take you to the Southwater multi storey car park.

 

Alternatively, there is payable public parking at Kendal Court TF3 4DT, 1 minute walk from Bishton Court. This car park is not funded by Learn Telford. 

There is no parking onsite at Bishton Court.
